The Health Benefits of Phenolic Compounds in Honey

Honey has been used for its therapeutic properties for centuries. It has antioxidant molecules that provide several health benefits such as antimicrobial, antiviral, antifungal, anticancer, and antidiabetic activity. Honey also has a protective effect on the cardiovascular, nervous, respiratory, and gastrointestinal systems. It is particularly useful for athletes as it helps in neutralizing high levels of free radicals. Honey's composition depends on its botanical origin, processing, and environmental conditions. 

Phenolic compounds and flavonoids are natural chemical compounds found in honey. They help stabilize free radicals and are often associated with sugars. The most abundant types in honey are flavones, flavanols, and flavonols.
